Winter in Israel is always short and many of us like the rainy season. Compared to the summer heat and haze, our winter offers some beautiful soft lighting and usually clear views of the landscape. The Ginosar shore. (credit: ITSIK MAROM)On the west coast of the Sea of Galilee, or Kinneret, the large body of water provides its magic too. So, type Kibbutz Ginosar in Waze and drive to the Kinneret, which is always a delight. For anyone who likes traveling and touring the country, this stretch of lakeshore which in the summer is a popular swimming site, is…
I have been a fan of Eucalyptus for more than 30 years – since it was a tiny place in the parking lot of what is today Supersol Deal in the Talpiot neighborhood, with a eucalyptus tree growing in the middle of the place. It had red-and-white checkered vinyl tablecloths and some of the same amazing food that chef Moshe Basson serves up in his high-end restaurant today at the top of the Hutzot Hayotzer Artists’ Colony. In fact, Basson remembers my visiting the restaurant with my favorite husband and my favorite daughter (she’s still my favorite daughter – not…
Israel is the Start-Up Nation, known for groundbreaking advances in medicine, agriculture, and technology. To all the inventions and initiatives, we can now add another one: vinotherapy. This is a method of treatment for individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress. It could be an army veteran or a survivor of a terrorist attack. The trials and research are being done here, and to my knowledge Israel is the only place in the world exploring the idea of treating those coping with post-traumatic stress through the process of viticulture and winemaking.Everyone knows and talks about physical injury. It is noticed, acknowledged, and…

It has been said that the Weimar Republic of post-World War I Germany died twice. It was first murdered, and then committed suicide. This incisive comment refers to the moral, political, and economic decay of German society during the Great Depression – as well as to the politicians of various right-wing parties in Germany who subsequently agreed that Hitler was the solution to their woes.Even though Hitler had repeatedly declared that he wanted to use democracy to destroy democracy, rule by executive order, and establish a dictatorship, the political elite thought that they could outfox the Nazi leader and “box…

Jerusalem, a city of 1,000 secrets, revealed one of them last Wednesday, when for the first time ever the press was invited to view the frescoes of Crusaders at the 19th-century St. Louis French Hospital – the long-term care facility and hospice for terminally ill Jews, Christians and Muslims, located opposite the New Gate and closed to the general public. The media tour, organized by Jerusalem district archeologist Amit Reem of the Antiquities Authority and hospital director Sister Monika Dullman of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition, highlighted the frescoes painted by pious French aristocrat and Jerusalem benefactor…
A US Army veteran who flew a black Islamic State flag on a truck that he rammed into New Year's revelers in New Orleans shows how the extremist group still retains the ability to inspire violence despite suffering years of losses to a US-led military coalition.ISIS's then-leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, killed in 2019 by US special forces in northwestern Syria, rose from obscurity to lead the ultra-hardline group and declare himself "caliph" of all Muslims. The caliphate collapsed in 2017 in Iraq, where it once had a base just a 30-minute drive from Baghdad, and in Syria in 2019, after…
