Israel Police's Lahav 433—The National Crime Unit summoned MK Gilad Kariv for questioning on Monday morning on suspicion of leaking protocols from a confidential discussion in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
The State Prosecutor's Office reportedly previously investigated Kariv's suspected leak of classified protocols from the committee after a June 2023 discussion where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed warnings from security officials about the security implications of the then-regular anti-judicial reform protests as "exaggerated."
Investigation into the June 2023 event found that "Kariv was the only one who reviewed the protocol, doing so twice and even highlighted parts with a marker—those sections that were published," according to KAN News.
According to KAN News, Kariv responded to the June 2023 event by claiming, "I have never harmed the security of the state," and that "Any investigation regarding leaks of information from the war cabinet, expanded cabinet, government discussions, and Knesset committees is welcome and appropriate."
"However, if this is a political investigation, selective enforcement, or an inquiry aimed at intimidating Knesset members, it will encounter the steel wall of democracy," Kariv added during the investigation.
Who is Gilad Kariv?
Knesset Aliyah and Absorption Committee chairman MK Gilad Kariv is a member of Yair Golan's Democrats Party, who called on the government to renege on a decision to invite far Right European politicians from parties with “definitive antisemitic roots” to a conference at the end of March.
He also commented that improperly stored rape kits may be damaged, which could harm the ability and right of victims to see justice.
He is also a Reform Rabbi and told The Jerusalem Post that the Knesset Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs Committee will be “the home for non-Orthodox communities,” in February.
